Going Suzhou Couple Retreat Garden

Here is some photos and story of the Couple’s Retreat Garden in Suzhou. This beautifully constructed private garden is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

suzhou canal village

My visit to Suzhou bring me to one of the finest garden surrounded by canal known as the Couple’s Retreat Garden or Ou Yuan in Chinese. Suzhou is also known as the Oriental Venice where canals connect to most of the populated area. Traveling through canal is the main transportation method used here. Today’s traveling the canals by boat is mainly for tourism purpose only.
Suzhou is famous with its classical private garden owned by the tycoon or minister of the past. There are hundreds of these gardens in Suzhou and some of them hold the recognition as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

suzhou canal village

The original garden is built by Lu Jin in 1874. I was told that this garden is used to keep Lu Jin’s mistress. The entire garden is actually surrounded by canal and the only way to reach it is through boat. So, in case if Lu Jin’s wife come over for some trouble she will have to travel the canal to reach the entrance and by the time she reach there, Lu Jin would have left the place through backdoor, smart heh.

Some beautifully carved stone art. Many of these has been severely damaged during the Culture Revolution.

The entire garden is built on a 0.33ha land divided into the east and west section. The residential area located in between the two sections. Within the garden, there is a man made lake with stone mountains surrounding the area.

man made ponds

The entire garden was so huge considering it was only occupied by a couple. Even a royal family in the ancient time may not have a residential place like this.

There is hundreds of private garden residence in Suzhou and some of them were pretty famous but you need not to go visit every each of them. There were mostly similar to each other consisting of rocks, trees and ponds.

Our visit to the garden eventually comes to the end and then we were brought to witness the manufacturing of one of Suzhou famous product, silk.

One year ago my previous coffee shop boss went to suzhou to attend a wedding of his good friend. His friend wife is from suzhou. After back from the trips he told me that the air at suzhou is very bad because there's very high population. It it truth? But the gardens there is very very fantastic. His friend wife came from a very poor families where their flat is smaller than us in Malaysia and one family with number of members staying in the house. He also brought some foods from there to us but I guess our malaysian here is not used to have this kind of food. Ha.....ha.....I think shanghai is very nice because I have known some ladies from shanghai. Eventhough they said that the expenses is very high and one table to food can simply cost you over thousand dollars but then the night scene there is really nice and you won't want to leave. Seems some of your photographs taken there also fantastic.I have been doing cooking foods for this china lady where my previous shop is at around disco area but then I can tell you that they foods is really funny and malaysian here can't eat what they are having. They requested us to cook those foods where we really felt very funny so I beleive when you are there, not all foods are nice to your group. Anyway, nice photos from the trips.

Suzhou is a heritage city where development is strightly controlled but there are new urban area developed recently to cope up with the population flood especially from Shanghai.
yeah, Shanghai cost of living is among the top expensive in the world along with New York and Tokyo.
Even rich people cannot buy a condo in the city. you got to be super rich in order to be 'selected' to buy a condo in the center of shanghai city
