Marble game

Recalling back the childhood game, marble.

Poh Chi is the term in Cantonese for this cute little glass marble.
Is is a common game played all around during my childhood. Be it at the neighborhood or at the school, playing marble is easy coz all you need is just some marble.
Back then, you get to buy this cute little glass marble 8 pieces for just 10 cents ! and if you have more money in the pocket, 1 box of 100 marble cost 1 friggin Ringgit only.
Well I only get 50 cent for my school pocket money each day back then so it was a quite costly game if I need to buy new marble everyday.

I sux at playing marble game and never really get to win any marble in the game. So, it's not my favourite game when I was a kid. Marble are expensive nowdays and kids don't play with marble anymore. Marble are now used to decorate an aquarium or flower pots and it is with a very low quality, very brittle and easily damage or broken if drop on floor.

glass marble
This glass marble or Poh Chi in Cantonese is an all time favourite game for kids during the good ole time except me..... I can't stand keep losing all my marbles to my friends @$#@$#...

There are a few way to play Poh Chi but I could only clearly recalled one of them. The Ring

marble game layout
Poh Chi is played on a dry ground. First of all, a circular line is drawn (known as the Ring) where all the marble would be placed inside the Ring.
It is up to the group of how many marble each person need to put into each game but it is usually between 5 to 10 marbles for a group of 3 to 6 person.
Then straight line is drawn about 8 to 10 feet from the Ring. This line is use as the start point as well as to rank the sequence of player to throw their Poh Chi

Before the game start, each player will have to stand on point A and throw one marble towards the straight line at point B. Player who throw his marble nearest to the line get to start first.

Once all the player know their sequence, the game will start. Each player will start at point B with one marble (known as the shooter). They will need to throw the Shooter and land it near to the Ring
Though some player would start shooting the marble in the Ring from point B(you really need luck to able to shoot a marble out of the Ring from a 10 feet distance)
Note* The Shooter shall never land inside the Ring otherwise the player will be penalise to start at point B

So, every each player will take their turn to land their Shooter at first. Next, the player will start to aim at the marble inside the Ring from the spot where their Shooter land and try to hit it out of the Ring.
Player who manage to shoot a marble out of the Ring gets a free turn to continue shoot.
The player takes whatever marble he manage to hit out from the Ring.

Common Rules

  • The Shooter shall never land inside the Ring otherwise the player will be penalise to start at point B
  • Player hand which hold the Shooter shall NEVER pass the Ring line when he attempt to shoot hit Shooter otherwise will be penalise.
  • NEVER touch the area within the Ring
  • Sometimes, player would need to pay a penalty of 2 marble placed into the Ring if found breaking any of the above rules

  • Next time I will post an article about Cutting Kite lines, the most dangerous game played during my childhood time. Stay tuned.
