My Brother In Laws Nursery

This is the story about my brother in law's nursery and farm in Ringlet, Cameron Highlands.

Cameron Highlands is the nearest highlands from Ipoh. Since the Simpang Pulai - Cameron Highlands road open couple of years ago, there has been a significant rise of visitors to the highland. The old route to Cameron Highlands is through Tapah and the uphill road is very narrow and sharp corners are everywhere.
If you driving downhill from Cameron Highlands on this route, have to be very careful.
Sitting at the passanger seat during the downhill was like grabbing your shirt on the chest and swing you left and right for like an hour time. Cannot tahan, sure vomit one. wek.... !

My elder sister married to Cameronian couple of years ago. This brother in law of mine is a farmer at Lembah Bertam near Ringlet. Before they both get married, I really never been to Cameron Highlands before, I swear ok. But eversince then(after they married la), I have countless visits to my sister family there. (I never count, thats why its countless)

Usually I use the Simpang Pulai - Cameron Highlands route since its easier to drive plus I could enjoy all the tourist spot before I arrive to my sister's house near Ringlet
During the weekend, you could usually see the place packed with visitors especially those road side market which sell flowers, vege and souvenirs.

Here is some of the photos I would like to share with you all during my recent visits

This is my brother in law's nursery, Poh Huat Nursery and Plants
It is located far away into the mountains in Lembah Bertam, few miles from Ringlet town.

It has various types of plants and flowers in the nursery, I guess there are at least 50 types of plants in the nursery now. However, Chinese New Year is just a few month ahead, there will be huge demand of Chrysanthemum for the fesive season. I would expect this nursery turn into a yellowish Chrysanthemum garden in a couple of month.

With all those different differrent species of plants in the nursery, none which I really know whats its name. You know, even chrysanthemum itself split into 10 different types (which can be found in this nursery). Big one, small one, tall one, short one, different different colors too.

A closer look on the Nepenthes. Maybe I could use this as a cup to serve drinks to my friends if I run out of glass at home.

Chilli plants. I'm sure you know the power of this tiny little chilli. It's really really HOT. There is also a small round type but it is out of stock now.

zhi luo lan
Zhi Luo Lan. This small little purple color plants is nice to keep in the house for decoration. But it dies at hot weather.
Ops, the one missing at the middle, I grab it already. pssst... dun tell anyone ok,

Ferns has a good demand in the market too. I don't know why, I saw its everywhere in the bushes throughout the route to Cameron Highlands
ferns
This one is known as the Fish Tail Fern Look at its leaf shaped like a fish tail. Now, you won't find this at the bushes so thats where the commercial value comes in.

Christmas Tree. I guess I won't see this anymore after Xmas so I better grab some.

White Anthurium This one looks nice

Most of the time when I visit my sister, for sure I will grab some plants and flowers back home. Though it wont live long there hehehe.
grab some plants home
Brother in law ar! You won't mind if I take this back hoh?
I grab some Xmas tree, chilli plants, red Anthurium and Zhi Luo Lan.

Plants awaiting for shipment is nicely packed before shipped to customer.

money plants on the truck
Most customer would be driving their trucks to the nursery to pick up the order but my brother in law does ship orders to some customers too, he's a really busy person.

My brother in law has another piece of land nearby which he use to grow vegetables. Last season, it produced more than 20 tonnes of tomato ! Well I got freak up with his tomatoes, everytime he comes to Ipoh, there will be one full pail of tomato. If I visit him during the tomato season, I'm not allowed to leave without the tomato.
Well, the tomato season is long over and the farm is use to grow French Bean
french bean
French Bean in Cantonese is Kuai Tow or Sei kuai tow (four season bean).
No it's not Sei Kuai Low ok.

The French Bean season is over too. I could see the workers are removing the plants and clearing off the farm for new crops
seasoned french bean farm
This is some old French Bean plants awaiting to be clear off to be replaced with new plants. The pots at the left is the next season plants. It is Chrysanthemum flowers for the Chinese New Year festival.

Technology : Watering plants now are done automatically. This tube is placed into every each of the French Bean plants packet. It will flow the water mixed with some fertilizer automatically in a certain interval. No need to spray water anymore.

A worker is packing the French Bean. I get a whole lot of French Bean to home. This time, I got freak out with French Bean pulak.

My brother in law has started to plants Chrysanthemum for the Chinese New Year season. There is a huge demand for that flowers during the festive season. Customers from all over the peninsular as well as from Singapore will hunt for Chrysanthemum at Cameron Highlands.

Some chrysanthemum plants awaiting for shipment. The flower will bloom in about 2 days after out of the nursery.

This is some newly grown Chrysanthemum plants. Timing is very important, you must make sure the plants bloom its flower exactly during the Chinese New Year or else no business for you. Different species of chrysanthemum has different growing period, it is a tough job to make sure everything is in place and in time.

I'm looking forward to pay a visit to the nursery before Chinese New Year. That is when all the Chrysanthemum start to bloom. In fact, all of the nursery in Cameron Higlands is blooming with colorful flowers during that time.

You can contact my brother in law through this number.

#2 ipohchai (2008-10-20)
azizi: daffodil is not likely be able to grow in our weather here. It may live in the highlands but in the case of Cameron Highlands, I ain't see anyone plant it so far, including my bro-in-law

Hello. I'm wondering what is the english term for the flower "Zhi Luo Lan". Thanks.
#4 christina (2009-02-10)
so wonderful! i hope my brother in law like yours! he! he!
#5 James (2009-03-12)
Interesting. Can I purchase some flowers there? If yes, pls give direction or map. Tks
#6 ipohchai (2009-03-13)
james: if you were just like to buy a few pots of flowers then it doesn't worth the effort to go there. it takes almost another hour from Ringlet to reach the farm and the road is not very pleasant.
there are many stalls selling flowers along the main road which sell about the same things too.
but if you would like to buy in bulk of large quantities, I could give you the contact :)
#7 Duan (2009-03-13)

we have organic fertilizer for plant in cameron. do you think your brother in law would like to try some organic fertilizer its a vermicompost good for soil and plant. or maybe he can introduce to other friends that are looking for wormcompost at low price.

Use organic fertilizer can reduce the usage of chemical fertilizers and reduce the price for organic vegetables.

You can always email me norhana@hijaukembali.com.my or call me 0192286010.

Hai.....eventhough cameron is not so attractive for kids because it have less of play theme likes genting, but it is a nice place for resting your mind where to release tention. It is truth that if you are not feeling well, better dun go yet because the road up is really making your sick. But then the enviroment and weather there really make you feel very comfortable. I am growing in food business, 2 yrs back, we went to cameron with some friends, my friends joined chruch group and we went on our own. It's falls on school holidays and no hotel is really available. We got RM100.00 per night hotel in the main road of ringlet, I guess....it is just a normal rooms with double bed. My kids asked funny question where the same goes to me and hubby when we are at genting for the first stay. Ha....ha...Mi, this cheap hotel no air cond meh? We break into laugh because I was so stupid until I call up the genting reception and asked them why they provided me a room without air cond.......they said that all the rooms at genting have no air cond. Aiyo....when night time came, wear two pieces of dress and long pant also cannot stand of the cold and then my hubby said...."so malu, asked the receptionist why no air cond"....Come to the pasar malam in cameron, aiyo, banyak teruk. My daughter loves a lots of things and my pocket started to make noise. But then pity her, came from distances miles and she can't have some of the things she really loves so I told her that, I will let her buy but then have to safe when we are back to Ipoh. Only things, I do not understand why the foods at pasar malam is quite eexpensive, for tourists ok la but then I see many cameron ppls also buy foods there, can they really survife with the standard of living there? Everydays woh? Last 2 yrs when we are there, my hubby said wanted to find a shop to develope some foods business there, but the up to the end we give up because the rental of the shop there is very expensive. Not to complain what but then tak cukup duit. Maybe our aged affected, after 40's, we wanted to stay in the places slow and nice and relaxing likes cameron. Dun know leh, maybe my daughter later can get a hubby from cameron like your sister, than I can stayed there for my old folks time. Ha.....ha.

Nice day!

nicole

Cameron could be a good place to relax and retire but the standard of living there is much more expensive than Ipoh or even KL.
Everything there is more expensive because it require additional transportation cost to reach there.
People there can survive because they used to it and there is nothing else to spend their money there, not entertainment not shopping, no nothing. not like in ipoh or KL where you have a whole lots of thing you can spend on.
renting a shop or house there need not to say la, land are scarce up there and there is a very limited amount of building and development is very stright. Just point at any shop lot in the town in cameron highland and they can easily worth more than a million ringgit, no kidding.
